Warning Signs

Signs You May Need a New Cap or Chase Cover

Look for these common signs that your chimney top needs repair or replacement.

Undersized chimney cap on a cracked, deteriorating chimney crown

Missing or Damaged Cap

Without a working cap, rain, debris and animals can get straight into your flue.

Rusted chimney cap with torn wire mesh on a brick chimney

Rust or Deterioration

Rust, torn mesh or loose fasteners let water and animals in and lead to bigger repairs.

Water leak stains on interior chimney brick above a fireplace insert

Water Leaks

A failing cap or chase cover can let water reach your ceilings, walls and fireplace.

Squirrels climbing into an uncapped brick chimney

Animal Activity

Birds, squirrels and raccoons nest in uncapped chimneys and can block the flue.

Rusted chase cover with pooled water and rust stains running down vinyl siding

Deteriorated Chase Cover

Rust, pooling water or a poor fit lets moisture into your chimney chase and rots the framing.

What We Install

Chimney Caps vs. Chase Covers

Masonry chimneys need a cap. Framed, sided chimneys need a chase cover. We install both.

Chimney Caps

Chimney caps sit over the flue opening on masonry chimneys. They keep out rain, snow, animals and leaves while letting smoke and gases vent properly.

Chimney Cap & Chase Cover FAQs

Answers to common questions about chimney caps and chase covers. Still have a question? Call us at 978-685-0609.

What does a chimney cap do?

A chimney cap covers the top of your flue. It keeps out rain, snow, animals, leaves and debris while still letting smoke and gases vent properly.

What is the difference between a chimney cap and a chase cover?

A chimney cap covers the flue on a masonry chimney. A chase cover is a metal top that seals a framed, sided chimney chase, and it usually has a cap built in over the flue pipe.

How do I know if my cap or chase cover needs replacing?

Rust, loose or missing mesh, water stains near the fireplace, pooling water on a chase cover, or animals in the chimney are the most common signs.

Do gas fireplaces need a chimney cap?

Yes. Gas appliances still need protection from water, blockages and animals, all of which can affect venting and safety.

How is the right size determined?

We measure each flue or chase on site so the cap or cover fits correctly. Caps are not one-size-fits-all, and a poor fit can blow off or let water in.

Stainless steel or copper: which is better?

Both last for decades. Stainless steel is the most popular choice. Copper is chosen for its look and develops a natural patina over time. Qualifying stainless steel and copper products carry a manufacturer's lifetime warranty.

How much does a chimney cap or chase cover cost?

It depends on the size, material, style and number of flues. The best way to get an accurate price is a free estimate, where we measure your chimney and give you clear pricing.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the job. Custom caps and chase covers need to be fabricated first. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate.

Can I use a store-bought or makeshift cover?

We don't recommend it. A poorly fitted cap can block venting, blow off in high winds or let water in. A professionally sized and installed cap protects your chimney properly.

Does a chimney cap prevent chimney fires?

A cap's spark arrestor screen helps keep embers from landing on your roof, but it can't prevent a chimney fire. Regular sweeping and inspections are still essential.
